Common faults
What Usually Goes Wrong with a Range
A range is two appliances in one housing: sealed burners on top and a convection oven below, each with its own ignition and control. Most calls come down to one of those two halves.
Burner Clicks but Will Not Light
The spark module keeps firing because the flame sensor never confirms ignition. Usually a fouled electrode, a burner cap sitting wet or crooked, or a clogged port underneath.
Oven Will Not Hold Temperature
The oven sensor and the control board decide when the burner or element runs. A drifting sensor reports a temperature the cavity never reached, and the oven cycles around the wrong number.
Oven Will Not Ignite at All
On gas ranges the igniter has to draw enough current to open the safety valve. As it ages it still glows but never pulls the valve, so you get heat from the igniter and nothing else.
Flames Yellow or Uneven Across the Burner
Air shutter setting, a partially blocked port, or the wrong orifice for the gas supply. On a converted unit it is almost always the orifice.
Knobs Hot or Hard to Turn
The valve stem grease dries out and the seal behind the knob lets heat through. Both are addressed with the valve out of the manifold.
Oven Door Not Closing Flush
Hinges carry a heavy door with the glass pack inside. Once a hinge spring goes, the door sits proud, heat escapes at the top and the cavity never reaches the setpoint.
Convection Fan Loud or Not Running
The fan motor sits behind the rear baffle and its bearings dry out. A stopped fan turns convection into a plain bake and leaves the back of the cavity hotter than the front.
Display Dead or Control Unresponsive
Power supply to the board, or the board itself. On built-in installs the outlet behind the range is worth checking before anything is ordered.

One burner clicks but will not light. What is that?
The spark module keeps firing until the flame sensor confirms ignition. When one burner alone will not light, the fault is at that burner: a fouled electrode, a cap sitting wet or crooked, or a clogged port underneath. The other burners keep working because they share only the module.
The oven runs hot or cold compared to the dial. Can that be fixed?
Yes. It is usually the oven sensor drifting, and the board is heating to the number that sensor reports. We measure the cavity against the setpoint before deciding whether it is the sensor, a calibration offset, or the board.
Do you work on gas, dual-fuel and induction ranges?
Yes, 30 to 66 inch units. On built-in installs the range is pulled out and reset without marking the flooring or the surrounding cabinetry.
How long does a range repair take?
It depends on the fault and whether the part is on the truck. Igniters, sensors, spark modules and valves are common enough that we carry them. Anything model-specific is ordered against the serial number, and you get the timing in writing with the quote.
Do you use original Viking parts?
We use OEM parts identified by the serial number on your unit. Viking revised components across model years, so the model name alone is not enough to order the right one.
Is it worth repairing an older range?
Usually yes. Viking builds these to be rebuilt: burners, valves, igniters and boards are all serviceable parts. If we think yours is past sensible repair, the technician will say so on site.
Do I need to do anything before you arrive?
No. Leave the range as it is. If the technician needs the unit pulled out to reach the back panel, he will do that on site. Only move it yourself if you are certain the flooring can take it.
