What Usually Goes Wrong with Viking Appliances
The faults our technicians see most often, and what actually causes them.
Oven Runs Cold or Bakes Unevenly
Nine times out of ten it's a weakening bake igniter: it still glows, but no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve. The oven usually lands 25–75°F below the setting.
Burner Clicks but Won't Light
Usually a clogged burner port or a cracked electrode, not the spark module. Cleaning and swapping the electrode is a one-hour job.
Ice Maker Stopped Producing
The water inlet valve or the module itself. On older units the fill tube freezes over first, so the unit cycles and hums but never fills.
Refrigerator Runs Loud or Cycles Constantly
Almost always a condenser packed with dust and pet hair, or a worn condenser fan motor. Coils want cleaning roughly once a year.
Oven Door Won't Unlock After Self-Clean
Either the door lock motor or a thermal switch that tripped during the cycle. Self-clean pushes the cavity past 800°F, and that heat is hard on both parts.
Dishwasher Leaves Standing Water
Start with the filter and sump — glass chips and labels collect there. If the filter is clear, it's the drain pump or the check valve letting water back in.
Wine Cooler Drifts Off Temperature
A failing thermistor reports the wrong temperature, a tired door gasket lets warm air in, or the condenser is choked with dust. All three show up as a few degrees of drift before anything fails outright.
Freezer Frosts Up
Either the door gasket no longer seals and humid air keeps coming in, or the defrost cycle has stopped running. Frost on the back wall points at defrost; frost near the door points at the gasket.

Is it worth repairing an older Viking, or should I replace it?
Viking builds units meant to be serviced, so a single failed component on an appliance under roughly 12–15 years old is almost always worth repairing — replacement costs many times the price of a part. Where repair stops making sense is a failed sealed system on a very old unit. The technician will tell you which one you're looking at before you spend anything.
