Common faults
What Usually Goes Wrong with an Ice Maker
An undercounter ice maker freezes water on a plate, then warms it just enough to drop the sheet. Almost every call is water coming in, the freeze cycle, or the harvest.
No Ice at All
The inlet valve, the water pump or the control board has failed, or the supply line is frozen. The unit hums and nothing forms on the plate.
Cubes Are Small or Cloudy
Scale on the evaporator plate, or low water flow from a clogged filter. Cloudy ice is the first sign that the plate needs descaling.
Runs but Never Harvests
The harvest solenoid, the hot gas valve or the thermistor has failed. The sheet freezes and stays on the plate until the machine shuts down.
Water on the Floor
The drain line is clogged or the drain pump has failed, so the reservoir overflows. On gravity drains any sag in the line stops the flow.
Ice Tastes or Smells Off
The reservoir and the plate need cleaning, or the water filter is long overdue. Ice picks up whatever is in the bin.
Bin Fills and the Machine Keeps Running
The bin thermostat or the level sensor has failed, so the machine never sees that it is full and packs the ice solid.
Loud Fan or Warm Cabinet
The condenser is clogged with dust or the fan motor has failed. The unit cannot reject heat and runs far longer than it should.
Ice Freezes Into One Block
The harvest cycle is short or the bin runs too cold. Cubes fuse together before they are ever used.

My ice maker runs but makes no ice. What is that?
Usually the inlet valve, the water pump or a frozen supply line. We check the water side before touching the sealed system.
The cubes come out cloudy. Is that a repair?
It is usually scale on the evaporator plate or a clogged filter. A descale and a filter change fixes most of these.
Do you service undercounter ice makers built into cabinetry?
Yes. We pull the unit out and put it back without marking the surround.
How long does an ice maker repair take?
Most visits are finished in one trip, usually under two hours. If a part has to be ordered we set the return date before we leave.
Do you use original Viking parts?
Yes, original parts wherever they are available. If a part is discontinued we tell you what the alternative is before we fit it.
How often should it be descaled?
About once a year on city water, more often on hard water. Skipping it is the most common reason for cloudy ice.
Do I need to do anything before you arrive?
Empty the bin and clear the cabinet around the unit. Have the model number handy if you can find it.
