What Usually Goes Wrong with a Downdraft
A downdraft is two machines in one slot: the lift that raises the vent and the blower that pulls the air. Most calls are the lift, the blower, or the switch that tells them where they are.
Vent Will Not Rise
The lift motor or the gear rack has failed, or grease has locked the guide rails. The board usually reads the jam and stops the motor before it burns.
Vent Rises Partway and Stops
The upper limit switch is out of position or the rack has skipped a tooth. The vent stalls at the same height every time.
Vent Will Not Retract
The lower limit switch or the down relay has failed. Forcing the panel by hand bends the rack, so we free it under power instead.
Weak Capture at the Back Burners
The filter frame is grease-loaded or the duct behind the unit is blocked. A downdraft pulls sideways, so any restriction shows up as smoke escaping upward.
Blower Runs but the Vent Stays Down
The lift circuit has opened while the fan circuit still works. Usually the motor, its capacitor, or the harness at the hinge.
Loud Grinding While Moving
The gear rack is worn or a guide roller has broken. Running it that way strips the plastic teeth completely.
Control Panel Ignores You
Moisture and grease reach the membrane beside the cooktop. A corroded ribbon makes the vent move at random or not at all.
Blower Will Not Start
The speed control, the relay or the motor capacitor has failed. On remote blowers the fault is often in the run of wire out to the unit.

My downdraft will not come up. Is that the motor?
Sometimes. Just as often it is the limit switch or a rack locked with grease. We test the lift under power before quoting a motor.
Do you work on remote blowers?
Yes. Remote and in-line blowers are common with downdrafts, and we service the motor, the wiring and the switch that feeds them.
The vent rises but barely pulls air. What is that?
Usually a saturated filter or a duct blocked behind the unit, not the blower itself.
How long does a downdraft repair take?
Most visits are finished in one trip, usually under two hours. If a part has to be ordered we set the return date before we leave.
Do you use original Viking parts?
Yes, original parts wherever they are available. If a part is discontinued we tell you what the alternative is before we fit it.
Do you have to pull the unit out of the counter?
Only when the fault is behind it. Most lift and control repairs are done from the front and the top.
Do I need to do anything before you arrive?
Clear the counter around the downdraft and have the model number handy if you can find it. Everything else is on us.
