What Usually Goes Wrong with a Column
A column is a single-purpose cabinet with its own sealed system behind a full-height custom panel. Most calls on these units come down to the defrost circuit, the fans, or the hardware carrying that panel.
Whole Column Drifting Warm
One cabinet, one evaporator, nothing to borrow cold from. A warm column points at the evaporator fan, a defrost circuit that stopped clearing ice off the coil, or a sealed system that has lost charge.
Frost Packing the Freezer Column
Defrost heater, defrost thermostat or the drain line frozen shut. Frost on the back wall points at defrost; frost near the opening points at the gasket.
Ice Maker in the Freezer Column Stopped
Fill tube, mold heater or ejector motor. On columns the fill tube frosts over first, and the unit keeps cycling without ever dropping a cube.
One Column Warm, the Other Fine
Refrigerator and freezer columns are two separate machines standing side by side. When only one drifts, the fault is inside that cabinet and nothing is shared with its neighbour.
Alarm or Display Lit With Nothing Obviously Wrong
Thermistors and the control board. A shorted sensor reports a temperature the cabinet never reached, and the board runs cooling and defrost off that reading.
Unit Runs Constantly or Sounds Loud
On built-ins the condenser sits behind the top grille and packs with dust. A blocked coil or a stopped condenser fan makes the compressor run without ever reaching temperature.
Panel Door Sagging or Not Sealing
A full-height door carrying a custom panel is heavy. Hinges and closers wear, the door stops pulling shut on its own, and the seal goes with it.
Water Pooling Inside or Under the Unit
Usually the defrost drain tube frozen at the base of the cabinet, or the water line fitting behind the unit. Both look the same from the kitchen floor.

My refrigerator column is warm but the freezer column is fine. What is that?
A refrigerator column and a freezer column are two separate machines, each with its own sealed system. When only one goes warm the fault is inside that cabinet: usually the evaporator fan, a defrost circuit that stopped running, or a system that has lost charge. The other column keeps working because nothing is shared between them.
Frost keeps coming back after I defrost it. Why?
Frost that returns points at the defrost circuit: the heater, the thermostat, or the sensor that tells the board when to run it. Frost only near the opening is a different fault, the gasket or a door that stopped pulling itself shut.
Do you work on built-in 18, 24, 30 and 36 inch columns?
Yes, including panel-ready doors. The unit is pulled from the cabinetry and reset without marking the millwork, and the panel alignment is set back the way it was.
How long does a column repair take?
It depends on the fault and whether the part is on the truck. Fans, heaters, thermistors and gaskets are common enough that we carry them. Anything model-specific is ordered against the serial number, and you get the timing in writing with the quote.
Do you use original Viking parts?
We use OEM parts identified by the serial number on your unit. Viking revised components across model years, so the model name alone is not enough to order the right one.
Is it worth repairing an older column?
Usually yes on a built-in. A replacement means the cabinetry opening, the panels and the water line all have to work with the new unit, which turns a repair into a kitchen job. If we think yours is past sensible repair, the technician will say so on site.
Do I need to empty the column before you arrive?
No. Leave it as it is. If the technician needs a shelf cleared to reach the evaporator, he will say so on site and it takes a few minutes. Only pull the unit out of the cabinetry yourself if you are certain the flooring can take it.
